Choosing the technology stack for a mobile app

A stack combines mobile interfaces, backend services, data storage and deployment tools. Choose it for the product’s requirements and the team’s ability to maintain it. Familiar, well-supported technology can be more useful than a fashionable collection of tools.

Map the technical requirements

Identify supported platforms, offline needs, device capabilities, integrations and expected operational constraints. Decide which work can be shared and where platform-specific implementation is necessary. Examine available API documentation and the existing system before estimating integrations. A stack recommendation should make these constraints explicit.

Connect frontend and backend decisions

The mobile framework must work with authentication, data access, notifications and administration needs. Compare managed services with custom backend work according to control, operating effort and migration requirements. Choose data storage based on the relationships and queries the product needs, rather than a default preference.

Plan ownership and maintenance

Document dependencies, environments, builds and deployment procedures. Review the availability of skills and the maintenance of important libraries. Keep monitoring and security work in the operating plan. A suitable stack makes delivery and future changes understandable; it does not remove the need for sound product decisions and quality assurance.
