How to create a mobile app

Creating an app begins with understanding the service it will provide. Design, technology and supplier decisions should follow that purpose. Work towards a first release that users can test and that your organisation can operate with clear ownership.

Turn the idea into a brief

Describe the intended users, the problem and the main journeys. List essential features and distinguish them from later opportunities. Include integrations, supported devices and administration requirements. A clickable prototype helps confirm the interaction before implementation and makes discussions with suppliers more concrete.

Choose a delivery approach

Compare native and cross-platform development against your actual constraints. Assess the team’s relevant work, communication and testing process. Agree milestones and acceptance criteria instead of relying on an unspecified promise of a complete app. Ensure your organisation can access the source code, designs and release accounts.

Prepare life after launch

Release work includes store preparation, monitoring and user support. Plan a maintenance budget and a process for managing product improvements. Observe where users struggle and measure whether the app solves the intended problem. Continue with small, prioritised changes that improve the experience and keep the codebase maintainable.
