Project guide

Building security into a mobile app

Security depends on the full system: the app, backend, access controls and operating practices. Identify the data and actions that need protection early. Reviews and testing should cover the actual product risks rather than rely on a general claim that it is secure.

Protect data and permissions

Minimise sensitive data collection and define who can access it. Use appropriate secure storage and encrypted transport. Keep server credentials out of distributed app code. Validate requests and permissions on the backend, and include lost devices, expired sessions and unauthorised access in the test plan.

Review the complete system

Threat modelling helps identify likely misuse and important failure scenarios. Review dependencies, configurations, logs and administration tools as well as the mobile interface. A focused security assessment can examine high-risk functionality. Privacy requirements and legal obligations should be checked for the actual service and jurisdiction with appropriate expertise.

Maintain protection after release

Monitor incidents, manage dependency updates and document recovery procedures. Keep access to production systems controlled and review account ownership. Security work continues as the product changes. Do not treat an automated scan or a one-time audit as proof that every vulnerability or operational risk has been eliminated.
