Understanding React Native for mobile development

React Native is an approach to building mobile apps using React and a shared JavaScript or TypeScript codebase. It can reduce repeated product work across platforms while retaining platform-specific integration where needed. The fit depends on your app and team.

Understand what is shared

Business logic and a substantial part of the interface can be shared between platforms. Platform-specific modules, permissions and release procedures still require attention. Sharing code is not the same as eliminating device testing. Evaluate the actual user experience and important integrations on both iOS and Android.

Assess the project constraints

Business apps, marketplaces and connected services can be suitable candidates. Specialised hardware or demanding performance features deserve a focused technical validation. Review the libraries needed for payments, notifications, maps and authentication. Prefer maintained integrations and a clear dependency update process.

Plan delivery and maintenance

Document builds, store releases and any native code. Maintain tests for critical journeys and monitor production errors. CaptainDev uses React Native for suitable projects, with the final recommendation based on product requirements. A familiar framework supports delivery, but good scoping, quality assurance and ownership remain essential.
