Choosing a monetisation model for a mobile app

A revenue model should fit the value users receive and the way they use the product. Subscription, freemium, one-off purchases, advertising and marketplace commissions create different product and operating requirements. Test assumptions before making them part of a large build.

Align payment with user value

Recurring subscriptions need continuing value; one-off purchases suit a different relationship. Freemium requires a clear boundary between free and paid benefits. A marketplace commission depends on useful exchanges happening reliably. Define the moment users understand the benefit and the reason they would pay, then design the purchase journey accordingly.

Check the operational requirements

Billing, refunds, account status, entitlement and reporting need reliable implementation. Store and payment-provider rules can change, so verify the applicable requirements for your product. Advertising introduces additional experience and data considerations. Include support and cancellation behaviour rather than estimating only the successful purchase screen.

Evaluate with real usage

Track activation, retention, conversion and contribution after operating costs. Compare realistic scenarios and revise assumptions using evidence. Avoid making the first release depend on a complicated revenue system before demand is understood. A simpler model can make it easier to learn what users value and which features deserve further investment.
