Keeping a mobile app reliable after launch

An app needs ongoing attention to remain compatible, secure and useful. Maintenance covers defects, preventive updates and controlled product changes. Agree responsibilities and service expectations before launch so that operation does not depend on informal arrangements.

Define support responsibilities

Identify who monitors incidents, responds to users and approves urgent work. Distinguish corrective maintenance from new features. Agree response windows, escalation and communication for important failures. A service agreement should describe practical commitments rather than promise unrestricted availability without staffing or scope.

Maintain platforms and dependencies

Operating systems, libraries and external APIs can change. Keep a supported-device policy, release process and tests for core journeys. Review dependencies and configuration regularly. Test updates before deployment and monitor their effect afterwards. Document access to stores, cloud services and source code.

Keep evolution under control

Use customer feedback and operational evidence to prioritise improvements. Plan capacity for maintenance separately from an unlimited feature backlog. Clear documentation and reviewable changes reduce the cost of future work. A maintainable product lets your organisation continue operating even when the original delivery team is no longer involved.
