Ways to fund a mobile app project

An app can be funded through customer revenue, founders’ resources, loans, investment or eligible support programmes. The right approach depends on the business stage, risk and planned use of the funds. Begin with a realistic scope and a budget you can explain.

Explore support programmes carefully

Public innovation support and tax-related schemes can have specific eligibility rules, application periods and evidence requirements. Check current conditions with the relevant official body or a qualified adviser before including an amount in your financing plan. Keep discovery, technical work and supporting documentation organised. Do not assume that an app automatically qualifies because it uses a recent technology.

Consider investment and customer funding

Business angels, funds and crowdfunding each involve different expectations. A prototype, credible customer research and a clear use of funds can help explain the project. Bootstrapping or early customer revenue may preserve flexibility, while external capital can support a different growth plan. Consider the obligations and dilution involved instead of comparing only the cash available.

Match funding to milestones

Separate the cost of validating demand, building the first release and growing the product. Release spending against evidence and usable deliveries. Keep operating costs and acquisition in the plan as well as development.
