Budgeting for maps and location features

Showing a location on a map is different from tracking a fleet in real time. The required precision, frequency and background behaviour affect development and operating costs. Define how the feature helps users before choosing a mapping service.

Distinguish location requirements

A nearby search can use occasional location updates, while delivery tracking needs a continuous flow of position data. Offline use and background tracking introduce additional device and synchronisation considerations. Specify expected precision, update frequency and behaviour when permission is denied or connectivity is lost.

Compare mapping and backend needs

Map display, address search, routing and point-of-interest data may have separate pricing and integration requirements. Review the provider’s current terms for your intended usage. Real-time tracking also needs backend handling, permissions and monitoring. Include the administration view if staff need to manage or investigate location data.

Control data use and battery impact

Request location only when it supports the user journey. Plan retention, access control and deletion for stored positions. Test on real devices with poor connectivity and realistic movement. Start with the minimum precision and update frequency needed for the service, then measure whether more frequent tracking improves the experience.
