Project guide

How much does a mobile app cost?

An app budget is a combination of design, development, infrastructure and ongoing operation. Two apps that look similar can require very different work behind the screens. To understand your likely cost, describe what users must accomplish and the systems the app needs to connect to.

Identify the cost drivers

User accounts, payments, messaging, booking, maps and offline synchronisation each introduce technical and testing requirements. Multiple roles usually mean additional interfaces and permissions. An administration dashboard may be essential even when customers never see it. Record these requirements before comparing suppliers, and clarify the availability and quality of existing APIs.

Choose the first release

A minimum viable product should complete a useful journey, such as booking and paying for an appointment. It does not need every planned feature. Prototypes and user interviews can expose unnecessary work before implementation. Prefer a small usable release with explicit acceptance criteria to an ambitious build with an uncertain launch date.

Include ownership and operation

Compare the total cost over development and the following year. Hosting, support, external services and new platform requirements continue after release. Check who owns the source code, designs and developer accounts. Weekly demonstrations and a documented change process make progress easier to verify and help prevent budget surprises.
