Designing a backend for a mobile app

The backend manages shared data, permissions and operations that should not depend on a single device. Its design affects reliability, maintainability and running costs. Start with the user journeys and the systems the app needs to connect to.

Compare managed and custom services

Managed backend services can reduce setup work for common needs such as authentication and storage. Custom services may be appropriate for specialised business rules or integration constraints. Compare access control, operating effort, export options and cost at realistic usage levels. Avoid choosing solely from a convenient initial demonstration.

Model data and permissions

Define who can read or change each type of information. Keep sensitive decisions on the server and validate incoming requests. Design the data model for the queries and relationships the product actually needs. Consider synchronisation, conflict handling and file storage where mobile use may be interrupted.

Prepare for operation

Monitor failures, service availability and capacity. Document backup and recovery procedures, environment configuration and ownership of cloud accounts. Growth does not justify unnecessary complexity from the first day; build for known requirements and review performance using evidence. Keep administration tools and support needs within the backend scope.
