How to scope a website or redesign

Before asking agencies for a quote, write down what the website needs to achieve and what has to be delivered.

Start with the audience and outcomes

List your main visitor groups, what each group needs to do, and the business outcome you will measure. A lead-generation website, a charity information site and an online shop need different journeys.

Inventory content and integrations

Identify the pages and assets you already have, the content that needs writing or migration, and any CRM, payment, booking or analytics connections. Agree who owns copy, imagery and approvals.

Define the CMS and handover

Decide which parts your team must update without a developer. Ask for editor training, documentation, access to the source code and a clear maintenance arrangement.

Make the quote comparable

Request a written scope covering design, responsive behaviour, accessibility, SEO basics, testing, launch, revisions and post-launch support. Separate optional items from the fixed-price core.
